This is it, this is the last advent calendar that I will be reviewing this year. Hope this was fun for at least some of you, do let me know in a comment below if I managed to get on your nerves or if you want to see another series such as this one next year or if the reviews helped you get an idea what each calendar was like and if reading the review would have changed your mind about getting some of them.
Wow, now that was long. However, I am afraid that is not the end fo it. This post, unlike the others, including the one about Liberty’s advent calendar is slightly different. Why? Well, while I did enjoy getting all the other calendars and I was really happy to play with them and the products inside, when it comes to Harrods, there is a deeper meaning. You might wonder what else could it be, it is just a an expensive piece of card filled with some goodies, and while that is true, for me it is so much more.
I never mentioned this, but I used to pass by Harrods almost every single day and yet in all those four years I never went inside once. Oh, don’t worry, I did visit the store, but that was back in 2011 when I was a tourist, but not once since then. My first visit made me feel like maybe I did not belong in that luxurious environment even though it could be argued otherwise considering that it was not just a random fact that I passed by the store so many times and at all hours of the day. Take from that what you will. I probably mentioned it in several other posts, but I hate the way that people in these sort of stores look at me, even if I honestly do not believe they have a reason to. They just make me feel super self conscious so getting this calendar was my way to showing to myself that I can do this, I can also shop there if I want to. However, another reason why I choose the calendar is due to the fact that it is to serve as a reminder of how far I have come on my own, but also as a way to remind me of that one day in my life when I stopped fighting against time and listened more carefully than ever before. That day I found a “light” so bright and so special and yet I could not see it for the longest time because of the shadows (which probably does not make any sense). It was exactly one year to the day when I ordered the calendar and it was one of the best days of my life even if I did not know it at the time. I realise that this probably sounds like a bunch of gibberish to you, but I needed to get this out there even if I probably could have done it in a more clear way.
I promise I am done with the nonsense now, let’s get started on the good part.
Harrods beauty advent calendar
The Harrods beauty advent calendar is the first beauty calendar the iconic department store came out with until this point, or if they did have others I had no idea about them. The moment I saw it, I knew that I had to have it. I kept checking the website for updates on the day it was supposedly released, but I could not find anything and I did not even receive an email telling me that it was on sale, however it definitely was at some point. The calendar that I got was probably one of the last few ones from when they restocked the item. I found it by accident, well it depends on your definition of accident in this case, but I went onto their online store and searched to see whether it was in stock even though at that time I had no idea it was supposedly sold out already as I had no idea it was ever on sale in the first place and there it was, so I moved quickly and placed the order. The next few days I waited impatiently to see whether Harrods would be able to fulfil the order as the email I received instead of the usual confirmation stated that they needed to check before sending me a real confirmation. Sooo strange, right? I mean online shops should have a stock number. At least Harrods did let me know that this could happen unlike GlossyBox which kept postponing my shipment without a reason and when I went to cancel the order, they told me they had more orders than expected so it was impossible for them to fulfil the order at that time… Anyway, I will stop diverging now.
So I obviously managed to get my calendar and it arrived in a huge brown box with the words Harrods printed all over in small print. It was quite weird to carry it upstairs to my flat and of course that had to be the one day when I bumped into half of the people living in my building. Inside there was more warping than contents though. After digging for 15 minutes and trying to get rid of all that wrapping I was finally met with yet another brown box. I actually love the fact that the calendar was placed in an extra, smaller box. It was a nice gesture that ensured that the calendar would arrive safely to its destination and considering the price tag is the least they could do. Inside the second box was the calendar which also had a plastic sleeve for extra protection and to avoid getting any scratches. Bonus points for Harrods and its luxurious gifting experience. The package did not even come in an actual gift box, but it still felt special. The big, outer box even had the name of the person who wrapped everything up stuck on the inside, sort of like Lush does with its products. Pretty cool, eh?
Okay, enough about the outer boxes, let’s talk about the calendar box instead. The calendar comes in a white beautiful box with the facade of the shop printed on both sides. It looks even prettier than the Liberty one in my opinion, and in addition, the box is made of incredibly hard card so this is one that you might actually feel tempted to keep. I am definitely going to try. The Harrods calendar also has 25 little drawers inside, but this time they were ordered numerically which makes it easier to find the right drawer to pull, but it takes away some of the excitement. However, it makes up for it through the fact that each product comes in a little soft baggie, well except for the last one maybe? I do not have 25 bags, I have only 24, but I do not remember if this is how it was when I opened the calendar or I managed to throw one of the little bags away as I was Skyping with my mum when I opened the calendar and was not paying as much attention. Anyway, I adore the little bags and I do not even mind as much the fact that the cards with information were missing. Liberty did have a good idea with those!
As for the products, OMG, the calendar has some of the most amazing products ever. They all look incredibly luxurious and so many contain words like diamonds dust or whatnot on them. You get the idea. What I like best about it is the fact that some of the drawers contain more than one product. You read that right, some of the drawers have two or even three products inside. The products are from the same brand, but who cares? You get more than 25 goodies overall so yay!! The other thing about the products is that this calendar is probably one of the ones that is most suitable for someone a little bit older as well. There are many advanced skincare products that are suitable for rejuvenating the skin and helping with wrinkles. I know that I probably should not be saying this, but even though some of the other calendars also had products for wrinkles and so on and so forth, the ones in the Harrods calendar look like they are more likely to work. To put it in a different way, the calendar is full of products that growing up I never thought I would ever touch. There are a few more affordable products, but many of them are crazy expensive, however as you probably guessed, you do not get a full size, but the sizes are generous. Also, there are indeed products that you get in full size. Speaking about generosity, why couldn’t;t they have included an SK-II while they were at it? Ever since I had to analyse the brand for a business course and then later on see it as a favourite product in the Harrods’ display, at a time when I was certain that it was not even sold in the UK, I have been really curious to try the products.
Overall, the Harrods calendar is absolutely gorgeous and the value is without a doubt a lot higher than its price tag, however, yes surprisingly there is a however, I am not sure that I would be willing to splurge as much next year on another one and I will definitely not track it as much as I have this year even if the department store does decide to release a new one. Don’t get me wrong, the calendar is amazing and truly great, but I feel like maybe I am a tad too young for its products at this time. If I were maybe 5 to 15 years older then I would definitely get another one without thinking twice about it, but now, as much as I love it, I might stick to this one. Anyway, we will see next year!
What do you think about the Harrods beauty advent calendar?
*Pretty huge fail with the photos, they were taken in natural light, but it started t get cloudy by the time I finished 🙁
